Abrasion Committee Minutes

Abrasion Committee

Hosiery Technology Center, Hickory, NC August 15, 2000

Art Caldwell opened the meeting and reviewed the revised mission statement, which is to improve upon existing methods of abrasion currently being used so that it is repeatable for hosiery.

The Design of Experiments (DOE) results were the next item covered. Art reported that the Stoll experiments were complete and that the Martindale experiments were ½ done. NCSU ran out of the Trizact before they could be completed. Art said that these would be completed by the HTC this week. The initial results on the Stoll showed the best results by using a 3 lb head weight, the NAHM foot form for applying tension and cleaning the sample every 100 cycles. The %CV was much lower using these settings. The file with this data is attached. Doug Bradley said that the ILE 8000 machine has been retrofitted to run “straight line” abrasion. Art said that this machine would also be tested.

Art asked the committee to look at the procedures for the Stoll and Martindale, which is presently on the web. It is currently on the web at www.legsource.com in the Sock Testing Consortium section. The group is to review these procedures by August 22, 2000 and reply back with any changes needed to Tony or Dan using the response form on the web site. These procedures will be published in booklet form for the meeting on September 19th.

The upcoming Standard Methods Rollout Meeting to retailers was then discussed. There will be a dinner reception at the Gateway Center Hotel in Hickory on the 18th with the actual standards rollout meetings the next day at the HTC. Speakers planned at the reception include Jim Black, who is the NC Speaker of the House and Dr Blanton Godfrey, who is the new Dean at the NCSU College of Textiles if his schedule allows. The committee then worked on the actual meeting that will be held at the HTC on September 19th. We talked about the main things we want to accomplish in at the meeting. These are to obtain buy in from retailers, testing labs and manufacturers to use these methods in order to eliminate confusion on what tests to use.

We brainstormed different topics to be sure we covered. These included:

  1. Summary of initial findings – Jan Pegram
    • Show initial abrasion data
    • Posters on edge of the room (like AATCC Meeting)
  2. The Designed of Experiments
    • Why we chose variables
    • Methods used
    • Write-ups
    • Conclusions
  3. Next Steps – Bringing methods to ASTM in October, 2000
  4. Resources available to retailers
    • Hosiery Testing Class available at HTC
    • Legsource web site
  5. Question and Answer Session
  6. Vendor demonstrations of machines.

Wrennie Edwards gave a brief presentation on what she will discuss in the Colorfastness portion of the standards rollout. She said that she would cover the methods agreed upon by the committee, which are all current AATCC methods. She said that she could demonstrate each method in the one-hour time frame but that she would like help from the HTC staff. All agreed that this would be a good presentation and appreciated her taking charge of this section of the September rollout meeting. We will try to have AATCC manuals on hand for the audience to purchase if wanted.

The next meeting will be held on October 3rd at the HTC in Hickory, NC beginning after the Fit Subcommittee.
